Transforming the former Lambert Memorial Hospital into Herriot Hospice at The Lambert was more than just another project for us – it was about giving back to a community that holds a special place in our hearts.
This remarkable initiative by Herriot Hospice Homecare aimed to create a warm, inviting hub where families, volunteers, and the local community could come together, reflect, and find support during challenging times.
Herriot Hospice Homecare, which supports families facing terminal illness and bereavement across Hambleton and Richmondshire, envisioned a space that would be more than just a community hub. They wanted a place where visitors could share a cup of coffee, connect with others on similar journeys, and explore ways to get involved – whether through volunteering, fundraising, or simply learning more about the services offered. The space would also host their expanding services, such as the Digital Support Service and Wellbeing Services for patients, families, and carers.
When we first connected with Herriot Hospice, it was clear this project resonated deeply with us. JC, one of our team members, met the hospice team during a local garden party where they were raising funds for this new facility. It was there that JC saw an opportunity for us to contribute in a meaningful way, and the relationship grew from there.
The design brief was clear: create a space that reflected nature, calm, and inclusivity – a place where people could pause, reflect, and connect. The hospice wanted a versatile and welcoming environment that could also host community events such as charity coffee mornings and workshops.
To bring this vision to life, we worked closely with Vicki Wright, ensuring every detail was aligned with their goals. Our team collaborated throughout the design process, ensuring that the space would meet the needs of everyone who would step through its doors. We incorporated natural colours and textures to evoke a sense of warmth and calm, blending the outside with the inside.
Inclusivity was a key priority, which led us to choose flexible, moveable furniture that could be easily reconfigured to suit different events and ensure accessibility for all. Tables with castors, for instance, provided flexibility while maintaining wheelchair access.
This project wasn’t just about business – it was about community. We reupholstered some Race furniture pieces free of charge and manufactured many items at cost price, ensuring that every element contributed to the space’s warmth and functionality. To make this possible, we collaborated with our long-term partner, Agua Fabrics, who generously supplied all the fabrics free of charge. Francessca Panetta’s expertise and dedication in selecting the perfect fabrics were instrumental in ensuring the final design reflected the warmth and inclusivity of the space. It was a true team effort – everyone involved came together not just to deliver furniture, but to help install and bring the space to life.
The result was more than just a beautifully designed space – it was a hub where people could come together, support one another, and find comfort in shared experiences. The team at Herriot Hospice Homecare was thrilled with the outcome, recognising how the space aligned with their vision and would positively impact their community.
This project truly reflects who we are as a company – going beyond the expected, giving back to communities, and creating spaces that matter. It’s a story of collaboration, compassion, and the power of design to make a meaningful difference.
